Appalachian and Irish Art & Music Program - Free
JOHNSON CITY — East Tennessee State University’s Center for Appalachian Studies and Services and the Office of Professional Development will sponsor two free evenings with Irish writer and runner Frank Greally on Wednesday, Sept. 12, and Thursday, Sept. 13, from 6-8 p.m. at the Johnson City Public Library.

The program on Sept. 12 will focus on Appalachian and Irish art, folklore, folk music, literature and poetry. The event is dedicated to the memory of Dave McClellan, a poet and professor of English at ETSU.

On Sept. 13, the topic will be Irish and American sports and the history of the legendary ETSU runners called the “Irish Brigade.” Greally will dedicate his presentation to his ETSU coach, Dave Walker.

Greally has edited “Irish Runner Magazine” for over 30 years. He has written about Neil Cusack, winner of the Boston Marathon and an ETSU alumnus, and he is the author of Running Commentary: Thoughts occurring at intervals in the field of athletics.

For further information, contact Darla Dye of the ETSU Office of Professional Development at (800) 222-3878.

Wildacres 2011

Twenty-two ACL members and a like number of Charlotte Senior Scholars, along with several "at large" guests met at Wildacres and were informed and entertained by Lewis and Marcia Songer with the program "Beauty Amid Distortion and Excess". Other highlights were:

  • Parties on the patio and sing-a-longs in the canteen.
  • The Farinelli movie where we learned and saw a lot more about this 18th Century pop star than we were expecting. The real Farinelli wasn't as cool as the guy in the movie.
  • The Wednesday Auction where a bidding war broke out over, of all things, a nutcracker.
  • A movie of Scott Joplin's opera, "Treemonisha", performed by the Houston Grand Opera.

ACL Anniversary

2011 marks the 100th Anniversary of ETSU, the 50th Anniversary of The Johnson City Seniors' Center (JCSC), and the 20th Anniversary of ACL.

A "promises to be memorable" part of the Seniors' Center Celebration will be The Drifters at the Millennium Centre, on April 8. Perhaps this could be an opportunity for ACL members to get together as a group. Download PDF on this event here. Note: The top of the document you'll download shows an event that took place in October. Please scroll down in this document for information on The Drifters event in April.

Message from outgoing president Jerry Paulsen

Thank you for allowing me to lead this group in 2010. I appreciate the help and support I received from so many people. I will be continuing my participation in ACL by serving as secretary for 2011. I also plan to continue to serve as webmaster for ACL.

Jerry
