March 20 9:30 Registration and Welcome, continental breakfast

10:00 Welcome from representative of the office of the President of ETSU We hope Dr. Noland will be available to speak but it's not guaranteed.

11:00 "Rest, Rest Perturbed Spirit": The Christine Burleson Story Does her ghost haunt Burleson Hall and the painting of her father for whom the hall is named? Was her suicide related to her affair which ended when her lover married another woman?
Robert Sawyer, Ph.D. Shakespearean Scholar, is Professor of English In the Department of Literature and Language at ETSU. The ETSU Centennial Committee funded his research on Burleson who was also a Shakespearean scholar.
   
March 21

The Origin and History of Bluegrass, Old-Time and Country Music
ETSU offers the first bachelor of arts degree in this music. ETSU Is also widely regarded as the home of bluegrass music in higher education.
Lee Bidgood, Ph.D. is Asst. Professor of Bluegrass, Old-Time and Country Music, Department of Appalachian Studies, ETSU. Dr. Bidgood is a musician and scholar, performing and researching musical styles ranging from Mennonite communal singing to bluegrass, old time, country and early music.

   
March 27 Photo Restoration and Cemetery Recording. Can you see your great-Grandfather in that old photo? Can you find your great-great-great-aunt's burial plot?

Dawn and Jackie Peters have acquired expertise in photo restoration since retirement . Jackie is also part of a group that has documented the graves in a number of old cemeteries in our area as well as researching the histories of the people buried there.

Genealogy 101
Just how do you go about tracing your roots maybe back to when your forbearers came to this county? What resources are available to you and how do you use them?

Dr. Jim Wilson, a retired physician, is chair of the Watauga Association of Genealogy and has agreed to share his knowledge of available resouorces with us right at the source of those not on the internet, our local library.

   
April 3 Art History: A Review of Western Painting from the Renaissance to the
Modern Era

Peter Paulin, MBA and third generation artist, is head of the Jonesborough Fine Arts Gallery, a nonprofit corporation. Its mission is the promotion of the visual arts through public outreach, art education and art appreciation. Its most exciting program is a cooperative art gallery located in the Old Town Hall building on East Main Street in Jonesborough.
   
April 4

Field Trip: Tour of the university's Slocumb and Tipton Galleries and
discussion of campus art programs.

Karlota Contreras-Koterbay, Gallery Director, will lead our tour and discussion. In the Philippines she was a gallery manager and secretary general of the Board of Directors of the Committee on Art Galleries for the National Committee of culture and the Arts.

Genesis: Two Stories of Creation
Did you know that there are two stories of creation in Genesis? I don't think this is usually mentioned in children's Sunday school. So what are we to think of this and how do we reconcile the two versions?

Patricia Willard, M. Div. a native of Johnson City, returned to our area after retiring from a successful career as a civil engineer in the Washington D.C. area. But first she earned a master's degree from Columbia Theological Seminary (2006).

Housing Solutions for Northeast Tennessee. The Right Choice, Right Price and Right Time: All about Eastern Eight Community Development Corporation which helps many obtain home ownership who might otherwise seem to be ineligible.

Retha Patton, Executive Director, and Jeff Keeling of the Eastern Eight Community Development Corporation will present our program.

   
April 17 How Public Relations is Framed by the News Media around the World This past summer John and one of his graduate students gave this presentation in Spain.

John King, Ph. D is a professor in the Dept of Communications at ETSU. He has previously spoken to our group about his work and travels to the far corners of the world.

The Effects of Age on Hearing Do you find yourself turning up the sound on the TV? Or does your spouse seem to frequently misunderstand what you are saying? Here we will find out just what is going on.

Marc Fagelson, Ph.D., CCC-A, is a professor in the ETSU Department of Communicative Disorders and also works with the Quillen VAMC Tinnitus Clinic.

   
April 24

Field Trip to the Chester Inn Museum in Jonesborough The museum itself is newly opened and came about from a grant that covered Tipton-Haynes and Rocky Mount museums as well.
The inn was first opened in 1797 by its original owner, Dr. William P. Chester. It is now owned by the Tennessee Historical Commission.

Deborah Montani, Executive Director of the Heritage Alliance of Northeast TN and Southwest VA,
will present a program on the history and restoration of the inn and also give us a tour of the house and museum. Prior to serving in this position Ms. Montani was Executive Director of RockyMount Living History Museums.

   
April 25

Advance Directives: Decisions for Illness, Hospitalizations, and End-of-Life. We all hate to talk about these subjects but are much better off to learn all we can in these areas when not facing such decisions for ourselves or our loved ones.

Randall Sermons, J.D. is now in private practice but represented the Mountain States Health Alliance for six years. He can educate us concerning the pitfalls and legal problems we could encounter in dealing with these situations.
